Our Impact in Indianapolis

HEALTHCARE INEQUALITY IN INDIANAPOLIS

Access to free healthcare is a critical need in Indianapolis, where nearly 100,000 individuals face barriers to receiving care due to financial hardship, lack of insurance, or homelessness. Without affordable healthcare, many delay treatment for preventable conditions, leading to worsening health and higher costs for emergency care. Free clinics bridge this gap, providing vital services such as primary care, dental care, and women’s health services to those most in need. By ensuring access to these essential services, we can improve health outcomes, restore dignity, and build a healthier, more equitable community for all.

WE BREAK DOWN BARRIERS TO RECEIVING HEALTHCARE

HAPPENING NOW AT GENNESARET

Hear their stories

HEAR FROM OUR PATIENTS

At Gennesaret, our true impact is found in the lives we touch and the hope we restore. While numbers may tell part of the story, they can’t capture the relief of a patient receiving care after years putting their concerns aside or the gratitude of someone who finally found an advocate. Our work is about people—listening to their stories, meeting their needs, and empowering them to live healthier, more dignified lives.

  • René
    Patient

René has been experiencing homelessness and living in her car since 2021.

Amidst the challenges of living in her vehicle, René noticed a lump in her breast. She was terrified that it was cancer. She felt like the world was crumbling beneath her feet. Fortunately, René was directed to Gennesaret’s Women’s Health Services. But with no income or health insurance, she was scared that she would be turned away.

When René reached out to the Gennesaret team, they reassured her that all services would be provided at no cost and that they would walk alongside her every step of the way. The team arranged for a mammogram for René… and later got to tell her that the lump was non-cancerous and did not necessitate any medical intervention!

With newfound trust and safety, she began to explore additional free services. René felt comfortable enough to address other health concerns—like the tooth abscess that had been causing her extreme pain and inhibited her ability to eat for weeks.

René scheduled a visit with Dr. Kate Gribbin, Gennesaret’s dentist. During her dental exam, Dr. Gribbin extracted the tooth that was beyond saving and causing René pain, providing immediate relief.

She shared, “Gennesaret Free Clinics treats everyone with kindness. They understand if you have no money or no insurance. They want to provide healthcare because they truly care.”

  • Arthur
    Patient

After relocating from Illinois to Indiana, Arthur found himself in an unfamiliar space with limited support and had nowhere to turn. A disabled veteran, Arthur was living in his car and desperately trying to manage his health.

While Arthur was able to get some health services from the local VA Hospital, he had no place to go to help him with his ongoing congestive heart failure. He was too sick to stay in a shelter. He needed help.

The social worker from the VA assisted Arthur with gaining admission to Gennesaret’s Health Recovery Home. Arthur was welcomed by a private room and compassionate staff dedicated to aiding him in managing his medical needs. During his stay, Arthur experienced a level of health stability that he had not enjoyed in quite some time. Following several months of recovery, combined with the support from the staff and his own resolve, Arthur successfully secured an apartment of his very own!

Arthur recounted his experience, “Gennesaret helped me really concentrate on my mental and physical health. They made me feel good again about myself… As I got better, they assisted me with finding an apartment and I have been on the right path ever since.”

Several years later, Arthur is doing well and still lives in his apartment! He keeps in close contact with his Gennesaret family, who couldn’t be more proud of him.
